The navigation bar has controls for Zooming, Panning, and orbiting as well as changing from orthographic to perspective mode and Visual Styles.
AUTODESK 123D MODELS SOFTWARE
If you use Autodesk Software you will notice the familiar Navigation Bar and View Cube. The interface for 123D looks a lot like a stripped down version of Inventor Fusion.
AUTODESK 123D MODELS HOW TO
For my first experiment I created a version of the Gotshall Block which I recently showed you how to model with Autodesk Inventor.

So let’s have a look at it! I had a lot of fun playing with 123D. Autodesk have partnered with Ponoco, Tech Shop and 3D Systems to produce the Physical items. The idea behind 123D is that you can use it to ‘Digitally prototype’ your designs, which can then be created with 3D printing, CNC cutting or even exported to your own Makerbot. “Now you can produce things at high quality, at relatively low volume and relatively low cost.”ġ23D does not create drawings. “It used to be that in order to make things you needed these big expensive machines,” Carl Bass said. The idea of 123D is to help out those people who would like to be able to Design and Create Physical objects for themselves, but who don’t have the craft skills or the appropriate tools to work the materials. It is a history free, Direct edit, Solid modeller based on Autodesk’s Inventor Fusion.

So what is Autodesk 123D?ġ23D is a Windows based 3D CAD program. This time Autodesk are aiming squarely at the amateur ‘Maker’ market.Ĭarl Bass moves one step closer to realising his personal dream of empowering a new Generate of ‘ Makers’ to use the latest in CAD, Rapid prototyping and the web to craft their designs.Ĭheck out this Video Interview with Uncle Carl explaining the Philosophy behind 123D and the Maker movement.

To download a copy of the 3D T-Rex model and the cut files for creating one visit our Laser Cut Cardboard Model of a T-Rex Head Sample Club page.Autodesk made the headlines this week with the Public Beta Launch of 123D, Autodesk’s new FREE 3D CAD tool. The final step in the process of bring your 3D model to life is to Export the files as PDF, EPS, or DXF files and then open them in a vector-based graphic software and printing the files to a laser for cutting. This feature comes in handy for some of the other styles of Construction Techniques, depending on the complexity of the model.Ĩ.

123D Make has a built-in Assembly Steps panel to help you through the assembly process. Depending on the results you are looking for, you can define a different Slice Direction for your model by clicking on Slice Direction then dragging the blue cone.ħ. To add more dowels holes simply double click close to where you want the hole to be, then click and drag the blue dot to the location you want the hole.Ħ. Select Square from the Shape drop-down menu and enter the Diameter of the dowels you will be using to build the model.

Now that we have selected Stacked Slices as the Construction Technique, we need to define the Diameter and Location of the dowel holes we will use to build the model. Select the method that best visually represents your model, is the quickest to assemble, or wastes the least amount of material - it is really up to you!ĥ. Each Construction Technique provides a very different style of assembly and look that benefits different types of models in different ways. Note: There are 6 different Construction Techniques to select from: Stacked Slices, Interlocked Slices, Curve, Radial, Folded Panels, and 3D Slices. This example is the Stacked Slices technique. Now select your Construction Technique from the drop-down menu. In this example the model's length was changed to 12" and the other measurements scale to proportion.Ĥ. In the Object Size panel you can change the size of the model. Then set up the sheet parameters for the material you will be using to manufacture your model.Įnter the Width, Height, and Thickness of the sheet you will be using, and fill in 0.00 for both the Slot Offset and Tool Diameter.ģ. Start by opening one of the example models in 123D Make or a model of your own.Ģ.
